Learn how to make hand-twisted string from found fabrics with Yindjibarndi artist Katie West. Katie West is a Yindjibarndi woman based in Noongar Ballardong country (York, Western Australia), working across installation, social practice, and textiles. Katie’s work We hold you close (2022) is currently on show in the exhibition In our hands, we hold, co-curated Zali Morgan and Abigail Moncrieff.

In this hands-on making workshop, Katie introduces the process of hand-twisted string making with repurposed fabric inspired by traditional techniques that utilise plant fibre. Come along, spend time with Katie’s work, and learn how to create your own string. All materials and equipment for string making is provided. You are welcome to bring any visible mending or small scale (lap sized!) textile handcraft projects you are currently working on. Come and enjoy spending time making alongside the artist and other workshop participants!

Please note: The main seating option for this hour-long making workshop is cushions and beanbags. There will be low stools and some chairs with backs available for use. You are welcome to bring along your own floor pillow if you like!
