OPENING NIGHT: Djeran Exhibition Season

Join us for the opening night of three stunning exhibitions that feature leading Indonesian and Australian artists.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITIONS

Pasar Malam (Night Market) is an immersive exhibition of screen-printed works exploring the transgressive, shadowy spaces that exist in our communities. Each artwork has been created by Krack studio in collaboration with Indonesian and Australian artists.

Presented alongside a sculptural work, artist Leyla Stevens will present GROH GOH Rehearsal for Rangda.  GROH GOH repositions the mythical demon queen Rangda, positing her as a balancing force for spiritual order and as an empowering female force. GROH GOH proposes a matrilineal reshaping of Balinese art histories, as a counter to sustained colonial and touristic interpretations, and examines how these stories migrate and reconfigure in diasporic contexts.

Often presented with a mercurial charm, the construction process (or illusion of it) remain visible in the work of artist Ida Lawrence’s work, as layers of paint build up amidst hurried brushstrokes. In the case of A Bigger Misha, Ida Lawrence’s ‘narrative painting’ combines text and image to a tell a story of (mis)understanding, (dis)connection, generosity, failure and surprise. Lawrence draws upon small observations, tiny gestures and subtle feelings that the artist has experienced or imagined in the places she has lived: Australia, Indonesia, and since 2019, Germany.
