Bazaar Special Event: ‘Net of Time’ Curator Tour

Join curator Anna Louise Richardson for a tour of our exhibition ‘Net of Time’.

About the Exhibition:

Australian artists Helen Britton and Justine McKnight have maintained a friendship and creative dialogue between their respective studios in Munich and Perth for over two decades. Developing their collaborative practice through conversation, residencies and travel, they collect, exchange, transform and respond to materials together. Their shared works manifest in the space between two dynamic individual practices and between disciplines, exploring personal and cultural memory through wearable forms, sound and textile assemblages.

NET OF TIME presents eight significant sculptures from the last 10 years made from materials the artists have inherited, gleaned or been gifted over the course of their friendship. Drawing on shared stories of migration, collecting in op shops and flea markets, coastal fossicking and family heirlooms, Britton and McKnight construct works that are part archive and part talisman, holding personal and bodily memory while taking on a strange and expansive life of their own. The textiles, shells, beads, garments and audio recordings they use carry stories encoded within objects, in an ongoing dialogue of colonial histories, womanhood and erasure that stretches between Australia and Europe.

Premiering at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre, NET OF TIME offers a rare example of long-term interdisciplinary collaborative practice. It reveals a rich material conversation between two artists whose practices have become deeply entangled across time, geography and friendship.
