About this Class
Explore Sugar Lift and Spit Bite etching in this two-week mini course with artist and printmaker Vanessa Lombardo. These techniques, used in combination, offer a direct and expressive way of creating painterly marks on the surface of an etching plate.
Across two sessions, you’ll begin by preparing a copperplate before experimenting with sugar solution applied by brush, dripping and splattering. You’ll then explore the Spit Bite process, developing tonal areas and enhancing your marks to create expressive and atmospheric prints.
Spit Bite traditionally involved exactly that, although we no longer spit on our plates! This playful combination of techniques allows for experimentation and spontaneity while creating beautiful, painterly results.

Building Accessibility
Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
We acknowledge these limitations and are committed to improving accessibility where possible. We continue to explore ways to make our programs more inclusive and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions.
Should you, or the person you are enrolling for, have any other additional requirements, please include these details when booking. Should you wish to chat to one of our friendly team, feel free to contact Reception on 9432 9555 or email ArtsCentre@fremantle.wa.gov.au to discuss any individual needs.
