Drawing Foundations: Portraiture, Architecture and More

About the class

Join artist Joss Gregson for a dynamic eight-week drawing course exploring a range of techniques, materials, subjects and approaches to drawing.

Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to refine your practice, this course has something for everyone. Across the eight weeks, Joss will introduce different ways of seeing and drawing, from quick gestural studies and observational drawing through to considered line, tone, form and texture.

The class will move between the studio and the grounds of Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre, with opportunities to draw architecture, gardens and natural forms from observation. In the studio, you’ll explore different materials and techniques, working from dry to wet media and experimenting with ways to capture detail, texture, light and form.

Sessions will include a variety of subjects and approaches, including close-up studies of natural objects, architectural and garden scenes, portraiture and working with a live model. You’ll be encouraged to experiment with different styles and develop your own approach to drawing while building confidence and skills along the way.

What to bring

• A visual diary (A4 or A5 recommended)
• Any drawing supplies you may already have
• Reference photos as the course progresses, if you’d like to work from them

Artline pens, some charcoal and other drawing supplies will be provided throughout the course.

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
