About the class

Discover the vibrant world of digital painting inspired by one of the modern art world’s true pioneers, David Hockney! In this hands-on course, students will use an iPad and Procreate to explore Hockney’s iconic approach to colour, line, and light.

Each session, we’ll break down Hockney’s signature digital methods by recreating select works he produced on his own iPad. Building on those techniques, participants will then paint their own original works featuring similar subject matter—from lush garden scenes and bold still life’s to charming pet portraits and simple outdoor landscapes. You’ll learn how to leverage Procreate’s tools to capture fresh, expressive marks, vivid colour palettes, and playful compositions that turn everyday scenes into joyful digital art. This course is ideal for beginners and developing artists alike who want to build confidence and embrace a fresh, contemporary approach to digital painting.

About Procreate
Procreate is a popular digital art and illustration app for iPad. It is purchased with a one-off fee (approximately $20 AUD) and does not require an ongoing subscription. Students will use Procreate throughout the course to create artwork and animations.
