In this 8-week writing course led by writer and lecturer Dr Prema Arasu, you will explore the diverse worlds of non-realist storytelling — from science fiction and fantasy to supernatural horror and speculative fiction. Together, we’ll examine how these genres challenge our understanding of reality, and learn practical techniques for building immersive worlds, imagining alternative futures, and crafting compelling narratives that ask “what if?”

Through a mix of readings, discussions, and writing exercises, you’ll develop your own stories and have the opportunity to share and workshop your work in a supportive, creative environment.

Whether you’re a seasoned writer or new to speculative fiction, this course will help you expand your imagination, sharpen your craft, and connect with a community of fellow storytellers.

What to bring:

  • Notebook and pens or,
  • A laptop or tablet.
