About the class
Join singer-songwriter and poet Emily Barker for a supportive four week workshop exploring both songwriting and poetry. Recently returned to Australia after over two decades in the UK, Emily brings a wealth of professional experience across music, writing, and composition.
Across the sessions, you’ll develop your skills in lyric writing, melody, and structure, with practical tools to help shape and refine your ideas. Through guided exercises and group discussion, there will be opportunities for feedback and collaborative editing to support your creative process.
The lyric writing and poetry component will focus on finding your unique voice, moving beyond cliché, and embracing more unexpected or intuitive approaches to writing. Sessions are prompt-led, with dedicated time for writing and experimentation.
Suitable for beginners through to more experienced writers, this workshop offers a relaxed space to generate new work and develop your craft.

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
