Afterschool Art Classes: Gifted and Talented Visual Artists

About the class

Join artist Jenessa King in a 6-week course aimed at students hoping to trial for a GATE – Visual Art program for high school. Students will learn about art elements and principles and be taught a range of skills, processes and techniques. Each week they will explore different mediums such as drawing, watercolour, mixed media and clay and be introduced to artists both contemporary and historical which are associated with each.

Image analysis and art vocabulary will play a key role in the course. Children will be encouraged and supported in opportunities for art making as a means of self-expression and communication and will get the chance to share and reflect on their creations during a mini exhibition held on the final day, which parents, guardians and caregivers are encouraged to attend.

*The course does not guarantee a place in a GATE program – it simply aims to give students confidence and guidance going into the exanimation process.

Please note: This course is designed for a specific age range of 9-12yrs (years 5 & 6) 

What to bring:

• A water bottle and snack or lunchbox for longer classes
• A sunhat for any outdoor breaks
• All materials included.

What to wear:

• Closed toed shoes
• Clothes you don’t mind getting messy.

Drop off and Pick Up:

• All parents/guardians need to drop off and pick up their child from the studio
• No students will be permitted to leave without written confirmation by a parent/guardian.

Building Accessibility

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
