Sunday Music: Ursula + Paint

URSULA

Ursula are a guitar band from Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia. Veterans of the city’s shoegaze renaissance, the four-piece fold 90s slacker grunge into heavier and more emotionally wired transmissions of sound. Their debut album Brains, Waste, Heart swings between pop-tinged choruses and full-blown claustrophobic heaviness, as the band wrestle with distance, panic and the dramedy of trying to hold it all together. New music is in development and it’s all Ursula: loud, vulnerable and delightfully human.

Made up of four friends from Fremantle, Western Australia, Paint played their first show in a living room in 2021, fulfilling a pact between its members and setting the band into motion. They began playing local gigs and house parties more frequently, and in 2023, after building a small local following, they released their debut EP Bugs — a collection of shoegaze and slacker rock–inspired songs that earned extensive airplay on local radio station RTRFM, as well as support slots for touring acts such as Hockey Dad, Narrow Head, Fleshwater and Superchunk.

2024 saw the band pick up momentum with the release of their sophomore EP, Gift Shop. Written mostly on a week-long trip to Margaret River, the project explored a wider range of influences and sonics while still delivering the group’s signature brand of fuzzy pop that radiates blissful nostalgia and fun. Gift Shop made waves in Australia, becoming the local feature release on RTRFM, earning a spot in Rolling Stone Australia’s Best New Australian Music, and receiving acclaim from a number of Triple J presenters. It also gained international attention from The Line of Best Fit (UK) and was added to rotation on Seattle’s KEXP (USA). In February 2025, Gift Shop peaked at #10 on the North American College and Community Radio Top 200 Chart, and shortly after, the band opened for The Lemonheads on the WA leg of their Australian tour.

In the second half of 2025, in support of their recent double single Forever and Always, the band began playing interstate for the first time — touring with Armlock in NSW in August and supporting Fool Nelson on 10 dates across Australia in October. Paint was also awarded Best Rock Act at the 2025 WAM Awards.
