Feed the Dragon Community Making Day: Session Three

a 10 nights in port Festival special community event!

Join ceramic artists Stewart Scambler and Mel Ellero in this free community workshop!

Inspired by centuries-old wood-firing traditions, Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre will become home to a two-metre-long Dragon Kiln. The dragon will be built on site throughout the festival before being fired during the spectacular Feast & Fire event on Saturday 29 August.

But before the dragon can breathe fire, it needs to be fed!

To feed the dragon, we’re inviting the community to join us at one of three hand-building workshops to make a small ceramic tea bowl or dragon sculpture that will be fired inside the Dragon Kiln. Whether you have a history of working with clay, dragons or neither – everyone is welcome!

After the workshop, your piece will remain at WFAC to be bisque fired and glazed by our ceramics team, ready for the final wood firing inside the belly of the dragon.

Participants are then invited to return on Saturday 29 August for Fire the Dragon, to watch the kiln in its all its glory as the brave Stewart, Mel and team courageous feed our hungry dragon.

After the firing, you’ll be able to collect your dragon-fired creation to enjoy for years to come.

Important Information:

• This workshop is free, but bookings are essential.
• One registration is required for each participant.
• Children under 18 years of age must attend with a registered adult. For example, one adult attending with one child will require two bookings.
• Only works created during Feed the Dragon will be fired in the Dragon Kiln.
• All materials are provided.
• Please come dressed in closed toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy!

Building Accessibility

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
