Join textile artist Roberta Leary in the studio to kickstart or strengthen your sewing skills in this hands-on class for beginners through to intermediate makers.

Roberta will bring a range of patterns in different sizes suitable for beginners and intermediate makers, or chat to her about finding and sourcing your perfect pattern or project. Whether it’s a bag, apron, bias-cut skirt or simple top, Roberta will work with students to gain confidence on the machine to bring your textiles dreams to life!

Across the course, you will build confidence with sewing machinery, pattern use, cutting, and garment construction. Roberta will also bring an overlocker into the studio for you to try.

Materials and individual projects will be discussed in the first class, and some fabric will be available to practise on.

What to bring:

  • A sewing machine in good working order (WFAC has four machines available for student use. Should you wish to borrow one of ours, just get in touch with us via phone or email)
  • A basic sewing kit (if you have one)
  • Any photos or patterns for your project
  • Roberta will advise you during the first lesson what sort of item of clothing, fabric and other materials you will need to bring along for the following weeks. But remember, natural fibres such as cotton and linen are best for learning!

Building Accessibility

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.

We acknowledge these limitations and are committed to improving accessibility where possible. We continue to explore ways to make our programs more inclusive and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions.

Should you, or the person you are enrolling for, have any other additional requirements, please include these details when booking. Should you wish to chat to one of our friendly team, feel free to contact Reception on 9432 9555 or email ArtsCentre@fremantle.wa.gov.au to discuss any individual needs.
