About the class

Step into the vibrant world of oil painting in Fremantle Arts Centre’s bright and spacious studio, where you’ll explore essential painting techniques under the expert guidance of Richard Gunning. Over eight weeks, you’ll dive into colour mixing, mastering form and tone, and developing your own artistic style while working on multiple pieces.

Designed for both beginners and intermediate artists looking to expand their skills, Richard will offer hands-on demonstrations and provide one-on-one support tailored to your unique level. Whether you’re just starting out or refining your technique, this class will help you build confidence and take your painting to the next level.

Bring a basic painting kit, and additional materials will be supplied throughout the course. As you grow more comfortable with the medium, you’ll have the opportunity to expand your toolkit and experiment with new materials and approaches.

What to bring:

• Canvas boards or stretched canvas (A2-A3 size).
• Oil paints (Daler Rowney Georgian recommended): Titanium White, Cadmium Red (hue), Phthalo Blue, Ivory Black, Yellow Ochre.
• Brushes (various sizes, minimum size 1).
• Odourless solvent and linseed oil.
• Jars with lids and rags.
• Palette (disposable recommended).
• Portrait photo (if painting a portrait).
• Still life objects or photos (if working from life).

Building Accessibility

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
