Introduction to the History of Modern Art with Richard Gunning

About the class

Join us for an exciting eight-week journey through the History of Modern Art—a course designed to introduce you to the groundbreaking movements and artists that reshaped the world of art from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. Perfect for beginners or those wishing to expand their understanding, this course offers a relaxed and welcoming environment to explore the revolutionary changes that defined modern art.

Guided by Richard Gunning, you'll dive into key movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Through engaging talks, vibrant slide presentations (projected for a full visual experience), and group discussions, you’ll gain insight into the artists, ideas, and cultural shifts that challenged tradition and changed how we see the world.

Each two-hour weekly session includes time for discussion, questions, and a coffee break—making this both an enriching and enjoyable learning experience.

Building Accessibility

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.

We acknowledge these limitations and are committed to improving accessibility where possible. We continue to explore ways to make our programs more inclusive and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions.
