About the class

This two-day workshop introduces the fundamentals of Copperplate Etching, a printmaking technique where students create indents or lines on a copper plate, which is then dipped in an etching solution.

Over a weekend, you'll learn to prepare the plate, apply hard ground, and draw directly onto the plate or trace an existing sketch before etching.

After cleaning and inking the plates, students will print their designs, producing multiple prints and gaining a solid understanding of the copperplate etching process by the end of the session.

This course includes essential materials such as copperplate (one large or two smaller plates), etching supplies, proofing paper, and a selection of inks (carbon black, warm sepia, ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, and warm red). Students may wish to purchase additional ink colours or specialist materials - Vanessa is happy to offer product recommendations and sourcing advice!

What to bring

• 2 x single sheets of paper for editioning purposes (Fabriano Rosapina 50 x 70cm 285gsm recommended)

• A4 or A5 visual diary/notebook

• 2B or 4B pencil

• Eraser

• 0.4mm black Artline 220 pen

• Full-sized apron

• Chine collé papers such as rice paper and acid free tissue paper (as desired)
