About the class

Explore a mix of textile techniques to create your own unique homewares and soft furnishings in this hands-on course with artist Roberta Leary. You'll experiment with natural fabric dyeing, master repeat print stencilling, and learn how to build up rich surface designs through hand printing and layering.

Finishing techniques will include embellishment with Kantha stitch—an elegant form of running stitch—and the use of colourful embroidery threads to add depth, detail, and texture to your work. Roberta will guide you through each step, helping you develop a series of stylish and functional pieces that reflect your individual style.

Whether you're new to textiles or building on existing skills, this sought-after course offers a relaxed, creative space to explore pattern, colour, and contemporary fabric design.

Calico and test material, as well as a linen tea towel, napkin and pillowcase will be provided as part of the course. Additional fabric and blanks to be provided by students. Roberta can chat to you in the first class and guide you on what you may need for any custom projects!

What to bring:

• Apron
• Sketchbook (A4 or A5)
• Pencil, eraser, sharpener

Closed footwear and appropriate clothing to be worn.

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
