About the class

Join artist Joss Gregson for a welcoming and creative introduction to acrylic painting. Designed especially for beginners, this course offers a supportive space to build your skills and confidence through a range of fun and engaging painting exercises.

You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of acrylics, focusing on how to create depth and dimension through colour mixing, light, and shadow. With a focus on still life and landscape painting, you'll work step-by-step to capture realistic textures, like the smooth shine of a lemon or the subtle gradients of a landscape. You’ll also explore how to simplify and stylize these scenes, offering a balance between realism and personal expression, and gradually build the skills to abstract your subjects in later lessons.

Whether you're picking up a brush for the first time or returning to painting after a break, this course invites you to enjoy the process, try new things, and start developing your own artistic voice.

What to bring

• Acrylic paints: Titanium White, Primary Yellow and Red, Primary yellow and Red, Cerulean blue, Prussian blue, and Burnt Umber to start with. Feel free to bring others if you have them. Matisse Brand is recommended.
• A pack of Westart tan brushes
• Palette, water jug, rags
• Small 300gsm Watercolour pad or visual diary
• Throughout the course, some small (around A4 size) canvasses maybe required.

Building Accessibility

Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre is a heritage-listed building with access limitations. While there are no lift facilities within the main building, the ceramics studio is wheelchair accessible.
